Electrical - JIS & CCA Battery Testing Information

Classification: EL10-010

Reference: NTB10-038

Date: March 11, 2010

NISSAN; TESTING JIS-TYPE & CCA-TYPE BATTERIES

APPLIED VEHICLES: All Nissan vehicles

SERVICE INFORMATION

Nissan vehicles equipped with standard lead/acid batteries use one of two different types with unique battery rating specifications: JIS & CCA.

JIS = Japan Industrial Standard, used for Japan produced batteries

CCA = Cold Cranking Amps, standard for North American produced batteries

IMPORTANT:

^ JIS batteries have different testing specifications than CCA batteries.

^ If you must use the GR8 Battery Tester in a mode other than MODEL mode, JIS Mode MUST ALWAYS BE USED for JIS batteries otherwise an

incorrect result will occur. NEVER test a JIS battery using the CCA test in the GR8; the test software in the GR8 is different for JIS and CCA

modes. ANY CCA value you may have for a JIS-type battery is inaccurate for testing purposes.

ALWAYS test with the GR8 using the MODEL mode (if available).

^ Selecting MODEL and vehicle type will automatically select the proper JIS or CCA value for the Original Equipment battery.

^ If the applicable vehicle is not listed update the GR8 to make sure it has the most recent data package.

^ If the applicable vehicle still is not listed:

1) Determine which type of battery (CCA or JIS) is installed in the vehicle. See below for descriptions of each battery.

2) Select CCA or JIS in the GR8 based on the type of battery installed. See below for more information.

2019 Nissan-Datsun Altima L4-2.5L (QR25DE) Page 224

Determine the Battery Type

Batteries with JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) Number

^ Batteries installed in vehicles produced in Japan have a JIS number embossed in the plastic on top of the battery.

^ These vehicles have a VIN that begins with the letter "J".

Batteries with CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) Number

^ Batteries installed in vehicles produced in North America have a CCA number displayed on the label attached to the top of the battery.

^ These vehicles have a VIN that begins with a number: 1, 3, or 5.

Selecting CCA or JIS in the GR8 Battery Tester

Vehicles with JIS Battery

^ Select JIS, then choose the option that matches the first five (5) characters of the JIS number on the battery.

NOTE:

DO NOT select CCA when testing a JIS battery.

Vehicles with CCA Battery

^ Select CCA, then choose the option that matches the number following "Cold Cranking Amps" on the battery.

with SULEV (California Specification) 2.5 engine

Check Service COMM to confirm campaign eligibility.

INTRODUCTION

Nissan has determined that some 2010 model year Altima vehicles are equipped with an improperly calibrated Engine Control Module (ECM) that

may incorrectly detect engine valve closure as engine knock. To correct this condition, Nissan is conducting this Voluntary Emissions Recall

Campaign to reprogram the Engine Control Module, and inspect (and if needed replace) the exhaust manifold and front exhaust tube. This service

will be performed at no charge for parts or labor.

IDENTIFICATION NUMBER

Nissan has assigned identification number PC129 to this campaign. This number must appear on all communications and documentation of any

nature dealing with this campaign.

DEALER RESPONSIBILITY

It is the dealers responsibility to check Service Comm for the campaign status on each vehicle falling within the range of this voluntary emissions

recall which for any reason enters the service department. This includes vehicles purchased from private parties or presented by transient (tourist)

owners and vehicles in a dealers inventory.

IMPORTANT

Attention California Dealers: California law prohibits owners from renewing their California registration if emissions related recall work has not

been performed. California dealers are now required to issue a proof of correction certificate to vehicle owners upon completion of emission related

recall work. Please fill out one of the campaign completion forms for each owner that has this campaign performed. Instruct owners to keep this

certificate unless they are requested to mail it to the DMV. A sample of the form is shown below.

CAN COMMUNICATION CODES - DIAGNOSTIC TIPS & GUIDELINES

APPLIED VEHICLES: All 2005 - 2010 Nissan vehicles

SERVICE INFORMATION

Related to communication codes U1000, U1001, U1002, U1010:

^ Always diagnose the communication codes first.

^ When a module reports a U1000 code, it is typically operating normally; however, there is a communication error external to that module on the

CAN network.

^ U1000 indicates an error. V-CAN diagram or CAN Diag Support Monitor provides data to determine the location of the error.

Step 1

Complete the CAN diagnosis with CONSULT-III (C-III).

^ Open ASIST first and then open C-III using the Consult Utilities icon. This step will help identify the CAN type on many vehicles using the SIS

function.

^ Ensure the correct CAN type is selected. Selecting the incorrect CAN type will lead to mis-diagnosis.

Step 2

View the V-CAN screen or print all CAN Diag Support Monitors (shown below).

^ The V-CAN diagram screen is a snap shot only. It must be refreshed after any changes.

Step 3

Read the V-CAN diagram using the key provided OR reference the appropriate Electronic Service Manual (ESM) to analyze the CAN Diag Support

Monitor data. Determine the incident according to the display.

Step 4

If V-CAN diagnosis is not available or inconclusive, refer to the basic CAN diagnostic guidelines shown below. These represent electrical values of

the CAN system measured at the Data Link Connector or connectors at non-termination units.

To properly perform these basic checks:

^ The battery should be disconnected for resistance checks.

^ The ignition should be off.

Tips if a control module is the suspected root cause:

^ Improper module configuration or incorrect part numbers may set CAN DTCs.

^ Low battery voltage may set CAN DTCs.

^ Always confirm the power, ground, and CAN resistance at a suspect module before replacing the module. Resistance should be close to 60 ohms

at the module (measured with the battery disconnected). The resistance at terminating modules should be close to 120 ohms. Examples of

terminating modules include IPDM, ECM, or BCM. Reference the appropriate ESM to determine the terminating modules.

2017 Nissan-Datsun Altima L4-2.5L (QR25DE) Page 224

Campaign PC125 - Brake Master Cylinder

Reference: NTB12-011

Date: March 8, 2012

VOLUNTARY SERVICE CAMPAIGN

2007-2012 ALTIMA SEDAN & COUPE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER

CAMPAIGN ID #: PC125

APPLIED VEHICLES: 2007-2012 Altima Sedan & Coupe (L32 & CL32)

Check Service COMM to confirm campaign eligibility.

INTRODUCTION

Nissan is conducting a Voluntary Service Campaign on Model Year 2007-2012 Nissan Altima (L32) Sedan and Coupe vehicles to inspect the brake

Systems in vehicles with an illuminated brake warning lamp. Nissan dealers will inspect the brake system and confirm that no brake fluid leak is

present. If no leak is present, the reservoir will be topped off. If a leak in the brake master cylinder is identified, the brake master cylinder will be

replaced.

2017 Nissan-Datsun Altima L4-2.5L (QR25DE) Page 143

The affected vehicles are equipped with a brake warning lamp that will illuminate to alert the driver when fluid in the brake fluid reservoir is low.

Fluid in the reservoir may become low due to normal brake pad wear and not because of any brake system malfunction. While in most instances an

illuminated brake warning lamp is due to normal brake pad wear, a small percentage of vehicles affected by this campaign may have a slow brake

fluid leak at the brake master cylinder.

IDENTIFICATION NUMBER

Nissan has assigned identification number PC125 to this campaign. This number must appear on all communications and documentation of any

nature dealing with this campaign.

DEALER RESPONSIBILITY

Dealers are to repair vehicles falling within range of this campaign that enter the service department. This includes vehicles purchased from private

parties, vehicles presented by transient (tourists) owners, and vehicles in a dealer's inventory.

familiar with the above information.

^ You can demonstrate the operation of the system by pushing the wiper lever down to the intermittent (INT) position and spraying/sprinkling water

over the rain sensor.

NOTE:

If a wiper-operation incident does occur, refer to the applicable Electronic Service Manual (ESM) for further diagnostic assistance.
