The Birth of a Racing Legend: R32 Dominance (1989-1993)
The R32 GT-R's racing debut marked the beginning of Godzilla's legendary status. In 1990, the R32 GT-R Nismo entered the Japanese Touring Car Championship (JTCC) and immediately dominated the competition. The combination of the RB26DETT twin-turbo engine and ATTESA E-TS all-wheel-drive system proved unstoppable on both dry and wet tracks.
Nismo's factory team won 29 out of 31 races in the JTCC during the R32's racing career. This incredible dominance led to rule changes that effectively banned the GT-R from competition, cementing its legendary status. The nickname "Godzilla" was coined by Australian motorsport publication Wheels Magazine, which described the R32 as "a monster from Japan that had come to destroy the opposition."
Group A Racing Success
The R32 GT-R also competed successfully in Group A racing, the premier touring car classification of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The car's success in Group A helped establish Nissan as a serious contender in international motorsport. The R32's all-wheel-drive system gave it a significant advantage over rear-wheel-drive competitors, particularly in changing weather conditions.
Super GT and GT500 Era
As the R33 and R34 generations arrived, GT-R racing continued in Japan's premier Super GT series (formerly known as the All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship). The GT500 class featured heavily modified GT-Rs that produced over 500 horsepower and showcased Nissan's engineering prowess.
The R33 GT-R competed in Super GT from 1995 to 1998, achieving multiple podium finishes and race victories. The R34 GT-R continued this legacy from 1999 to 2003, becoming one of the most successful cars in Super GT history. Notable drivers like Masahiro Hasemi, Michael Krumm, and Satoshi Motoyama helped establish the GT-R as a Super GT icon.
GT3 Racing: The R35 Era
The R35 GT-R entered GT3 racing in 2011, competing in customer racing programs worldwide. The GT3-spec GT-R was developed to be more accessible to privateer teams while maintaining the GT-R's competitive edge. The car has competed in numerous GT3 championships including:
- **Blancpain GT Series**: The GT-R GT3 achieved multiple podium finishes and race victories
- **Nürburgring 24 Hours**: The GT-R has been a regular competitor, with Nismo achieving class victories
- **Australian GT Championship**: The GT-R GT3 has dominated in Australian racing
- **IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship**: Competing in the GTLM class
Le Mans and Endurance Racing
Nissan's ambitions extended to the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 2015, Nissan returned to Le Mans with the GT-R LM Nismo, a revolutionary front-engine, front-wheel-drive prototype with hybrid technology. While the project was ultimately unsuccessful due to reliability issues, it demonstrated Nissan's commitment to top-tier motorsport.
The GT-R also competes in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, one of the world's most challenging endurance races. Nismo's GT-R Nürburgring 24 Hour cars have achieved multiple top-10 finishes, showcasing the GT-R's durability and performance capabilities.
Drag Racing and Time Attack
Beyond traditional circuit racing, the GT-R has proven itself in drag racing and time attack competitions. The GT-R's launch control and all-wheel-drive system make it particularly competitive in drag racing, with stock and modified GT-Rs regularly achieving sub-10-second quarter-mile times.
In time attack competitions, GT-Rs have set numerous records at venues like the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The R35 GT-R Nismo holds a production car lap record at the Nürburgring, demonstrating the car's incredible handling capabilities.
The Racing Legacy Continues
Today, the GT-R continues to compete in various racing series around the world. Privateer teams run GT3-spec GT-Rs in championships across Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. The GT-R's racing heritage has been instrumental in developing road-going models, with technology from race cars regularly filtering down to production GT-Rs.
From the R32's domestic dominance to the R35's global GT3 success, the GT-R's racing heritage is unmatched among production-based sports cars. Godzilla remains a force to be reckoned with on racetracks worldwide, continuing to build on the legendary status established nearly three decades ago.
