2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV gets more power and more range

There's a brand new Mitsubishi Outlander for the 2022 model year, and we've been told that a plug-in hybrid version is on the way. But before that happens, Mitsubishi has given the current Outlander PHEV an under-the-skin refresh for 2021 that brings more power, more range and a new trim level. Despite the upgrades, the starting price hasn't budged.

The Outlander PHEV gets a new 2.4-liter engine rated at 126 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque that replaces the previous 2.0-liter engine. A rear-axle-mounted electric motor adds 70kW of electric power, up 10kW over the old version. Add it all up and the powertrain spins out a total of 221 hp, up 31 ponies from the previous model. Updated software is said to improve "synchronization between battery and engine," which Mitsubishi says yields reductions in noise, vibration and harshness. All Outlander PHEVs are equipped with Mitsubishi's Super All-Wheel Control all-wheel drive system, and the 2021 edition gains Sport and Snow driving modes.

Along with the power boost, the Outlander PHEV's battery capacity increases from 12.0 kW/h to 13.8 kW/h. That adds two additional miles of all-electric range for a total of up to 24 miles. Mitsubishi also says the top speed under electric power with no assistance from the gasoline engine rises from 79 mph to 83 mph. According to the EPA, the 2021 Outlander PHEV scores a combined 74 MPGe while running in hybrid electric mode and 26 MPG combined once the battery is depleted. That's an improvement of one mile per gallon.

In addition to last year's SEL and GT trim levels, the 2021 Outlander PHEV gains an LE edition. The new trim adds a blacked-out grille, dark chrome dual spoke 18-inch alloy wheels and a blackout design for the front and rear bumpers. Also standard on the LE are a sunroof and upgraded audio system.

Despite the significant upgrades for 2021, the Outlander PHEV SEL starts at the same $37,490 asking price as before. The LE costs $39,190 and the top-spec GT lists at $43,190. Buyers are eligible for $6,587 in federal tax credits, which is up $751 compared to the 2020 model year due to the increase in battery capacity. Tesla stops taking orders for the entry-level Model Y

We hope you didn't have your heart set on that brand new Standard Range Model Y. As Electrek has learned, Tesla has quietly stopped taking orders for the 'entry' version of the electric crossover mere weeks after launching it. At the moment, you'll have to spend at least $48,990 for the Long Range all-wheel drive variant ($1,000 less than before) if you want more interior space than the Model 3 can offer.

It's not clear why Tesla dropped the Standard Range trim, or whether or not this is a temporary move. We've asked Tesla for comment, but the EV maker is believed to have disbanded its PR team.

It would be an odd decision if it was permanent. Tesla cut the base Model Y's price to $39,990 just days earlier in an apparent effort to boost sales — this would clearly have the opposite effect. It might represent a pause as Tesla deals with an order backlog, retools production or otherwise decides that it can't sell the Standard Range vehicle for a while.

If nothing else, the removal underscores complaints about Tesla's sales strategy. The company's frequent price tinkering can make its EVs more accessible than those from veteran automakers, many of which wait until new model years to drop prices or add features. However, the inconsistency also makes it difficult to know when it's a good time to buy. You may hold off on a purchase only to watch a deal vanish without warning, leaving you no choice but to either keep waiting or buy an alternative.

We’ve been seeing traces of the new Nissan Z as far back as 2019, and even after the company unveiled the nearly-ready Z Proto concept last year, speculation about Nissan’s newest Z car hasn’t ceased. Now, the wait is finally over, as the car will be unveiled virtually on Tuesday, August 17 at 8PM EST. 

All signs point to the production car looking nearly identical to the concept inside and out, with the numerous patent images, photos of it in transport, and spy shots of it camouflaged out on the streets confirming its modern yet retro design. The car is expected to be called just “Z”, and will most likely feature the same twin-turbo 3.0L V6 from Infiniti’s Red Sport 400 models making around, you guessed it, 400 hp (405 PS / 298 kW). A manual transmission will still be offered, and less surprisingly, it will still be rear-wheel drive.

Pricing is rumored to be in the $40,000 range, although one source claims it could start from as little as $34,995. Should the latter be true, that would make it around $5,000 more expensive than the 370Z it’s replacing, but it would undercut the Supra 3.0 by $16,950, and even the Supra 2.0 by $7,950. Order books for the new Z could possibly open up as early as November 15, which is quite a ways away, but not too bad considering how long we’ve waited for the car to arrive.

The 2023 Nissan Z Has Arrived. Here's Everything You Need to Know

It's been a long, long, loooooooong time coming — but the replacement for the aged Nissan 370Z has, at long last, arrived. 

First off, the name. The car we thought would be called the 2022 Nissan 400Z is, in fact, known as the 2023 Nissan Z — a more open-ended name for a new generation of the sports car. 

Still, the 400Z name would have been fairly appropriate, as this new Nissan whips up a cool 400 horsepower from its twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 — the same engine found in the Infiniti Q50 Red Sport. Much like the Infiniti, it also spits out 350 lb-ft of torque, stretching across a wide plateau from 1,600 to 5,600 rpm. 

Unlike the Infiniti, however, which only offers a nine-speed automatic gearbox, buyers of the 2023 Z will be faced with a choice of transmission: that nine-speed slushbox (with paddle shifters, of course) or a six-speed manual gearbox with a high-performance clutch. Either way, however, you'll be able to execute sweet hole shots on command, as both gearboxes offer launch control functionality.   

The new Z comes in two additional flavors beyond manual or automatic: Sport and Performance. (Yes, those sound pretty similar.) Sport is the base model, packing 18-inch wheels and 2-piston front / single-piston rear brakes; Performance cars boast 19-inch wheels with more performance-oriented tires, larger brake disks and floating 4-piston front / 2-piston rear calipers. Every 2023 Nissan Z represents a massive leap up from its predecessor inside, however. While the 2020 370Z's guts still looked straight out of the early Obama years, the all-new car boasts tech that feels very much of the modern era — though without ditching the style of the old version entirely. A 12.3-inch digital instrument panel comes standard, although analog gauge pods for boost, turbo speed and voltage still lie alongside. 

The seats — cloth in the Sport, heated leather in the Performance — were inspired by those of the GT-R. Sport models score an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a six-speaker stereo, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; Performance versions get a 9.0-inch screen with an eight-speaker Bose stereo, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

If you've seen the Z Proto — and odds are good that if you're reading this, you have — the 2023 Nissan Z should look pretty familiar. There's a long hood and a squared-off rear, creating a profile that brings to mind Z-cars of yore; in addition, the LED headlights' design is designed to evoke those of the 1970s-era 240ZG, while the tail lamps are designed to remind you of the 300ZX. 

Well, that remains to be seen. As of press time, Nissan hadn't announced pricing for the new car. (The company's COO mentioned that he expected it to start around $40,000, but there's a lot of wiggle room there.) Still, with the 2023 Z not expected to reach showrooms until spring of 2022, Nissan has plenty of time to sort that out...and hopefully, it'll actually start near the outgoing model's $30,090 base price.

Porsche highlights what makes the Cross Turismo different from the Taycan

Porsche is putting the final test miles on the Taycan Cross Turismo, an electric wagon due out in early 2021. As we wait for the official unveiling, the company highlighted some of the key differences between its two EVs.

Although it's fully covered in camouflage, the Cross Turismo leaves little to the imagination because it was previewed by the Mission E Cross Turismo concept presented at the 2018 Geneva show. It's visibly related to the Taycan, and the two share a front end, but the wagon gains a taller roof with a set of rails and a more upright hatch. It's still characterized by a form-over-function approach to design; it's not as boxy as, say, a Volvo 245.

Shapely and spacious aren't mutually exclusive. Extending the Taycan's roof line clears up more space for the second-row passengers, and Porsche in turn mounted the rear bench higher to make the cabin easier to get in and out of. Of course, the wagon offers more cargo space than its fastback-like counterpart.

"With the Taycan Cross Turismo, we wanted to offer a little bit more space, a little more flexibility and versatility," said Stefan Weckbach, the head of the Taycan line. He pointed out he can fit a mountain bike in the trunk.

Specifications haven't been released yet, but the Cross Turismo's range, horsepower, and acceleration figures will presumably look a lot like the Taycan's. It will gain ground clearance thanks to a modified suspension system, however, and Weckbach revealed a body style-specific driving mode will make the wagon more capable on dirt roads. It won't take you down the Rubicon Trail, but it will be more comfortable on dirt roads than the Taycan.

Porsche will introduce the Taycan Cross Turismo in early 2021, so about three years after the design study made its debut in Switzerland. Sales will start shortly after, and deliveries should begin in time for the 2022 model year.

Launched in 2020, at the height of the ongoing pandemic, the Taycan ended the year as Porsche's fourth-best-selling model in the United States, behind the Macan, the Cayenne, and the 911 but ahead of the Panamera. Expanding the range will ensure that demand remains high on both sides of the Atlantic.

Bookmark this page and set your alarm, because the 2023 Nissan Z will make its online debut on Tuesday at 8:00 pm ET via YouTube from New York City.

What do we expect to see? Not a lot of surprises. The new Z was previewed by the Z Proto in 2020, and the production car should be true to that thinly veiled prototype.

Based on the prototype, the Z35-generation Z will combine designs from classic Zs from both the 1970s and 1990s. With a long hood, short deck, and traditional sports car proportions, the profile will hearken back to that of the original 240Z. The front end nods toward that first Z with round LED daytime running lights and a large rectangular grille. The rear jumps a few decades and throws some Z32 1990s vibes with horizontal LED taillights.

Inside the Z will likely feature a digital gauge cluster, large touchscreen, and three analog gauges canted towards the driver.

Modern safety equipment might finally make its way into the Z including automatic emergency braking, as Nissan makes this technology standard on most of its new vehicles.

New Nissan Z: Here’s Everything to Know Ahead of Tonight’s Debut

    If you've explored the automotive web within the last few hours, you'll probably know that today was the day Toyota chose to release the first driving impressions of the 2022 Toyota GR 86 (spoiler alert, it's even better than before). As one rear-drive Japanese sports car's hype-cycle comes to a close, another is just beginning because, tonight, the official, production-ready version of the Nissan Z will finally be upon us. In the meantime, here's what we know, have heard, and have seen about the car so far.   

    Judging from patent images and leaked factory photos, it doesn't look like the production Z will deviate much from the Proto we all saw and drooled over for much of the past year. Big, squared-off grille, classic Z-car proportions, and taillights inspired by the 300ZX are all things we fully expect to make it onto the showroom version. Under that skin, Nissan has already confirmed a twin-turbo V6 paired to a six-speed manual as standard or an optional automatic. Power, torque, and displacement remain unconfirmed. For what it's worth, however, rumors and a candid peek under the Proto's hood point to the 3.0-liter VR30DDTT engine found in the Infiniti Q60. It's good for 400 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque in that luxury coupe's Red Sport version.    

"    Speaking of the potential 400 hp, many on the internet have taken to calling this car the ""400Z"" throughout its development but, notably, that's not a name that's ever been used by Nissan itself. The rear of the Z Proto sports a badge that reads ""Fairlady Z"" while Nissan's official press release reminding us of tonight's reveal simply refers to the car as ""the all-new Z"" with no prefixes, numerical or otherwise. Whether that's simply a placeholder or Nissan is actually, simply calling this one the ""Z"" remains to be seen.Thankfully, you won't have to wait much longer because the full reveal is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT tonight at which point Nissan's official livestream, which has handily been embedded at the bottom of this post, will begin. NEW YORK — Two of the biggest remaining American tire companies are joining forces.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber is acquiring Cooper in a deal valued at $2.5 billion that will combine the two century-old Ohio manufacturers.

Cooper, founded in 1914, is the fifth-largest tire maker in North America based on revenue. The company has about 10,000 employees in 15 countries. In addition to the Cooper brand, it also owns Mastercraft, Roadmaster and Mickey Thompson.

For Goodyear, the bigger company, the deal will nearly double its presence in China. Cooper will get access to Goodyear's 2,500 retail locations.

The auto industry navigated a whirlwind year with the pandemic and all of the economic disruptions that accompanied it. Industry analysts see a rebound this year as vaccines are more broadly distributed, but many do not see activity reaching the levels of 2019, before the pandemic hit.

But shares in both companies have been rising sharply over the past year, particularly in the past three moths. Shares of Goodyear are up more than 21% in the past 30 days. Shares of Cooper are up almost 10% in that time.

Shareholders of Cooper Tire & Rubber, based in Findlay, Ohio, will get $41.75 in cash and about .9 shares of Goodyear common stock per share of Cooper stock. Based on Goodyear's closing price on Friday, the total consideration for Cooper shareholders is $54.36 per share, a 24% premium to Cooper's closing price on Friday. Shares in Cooper jumped 17% in premarket trading.

The deal, which has been approved by the boards of both companies, is expected to close in the second half of this year. It would give shareholders of Goodyear, based in Akron, Ohio, about 84% of the company and Cooper shareholders with the remaining 16%, the companies said.

Rumours of the return of an F variant with the IS sedan were confirmed today as Lexus launched the IS 500 F Sport Performance. Interestingly, the IS 500 F Sport Performance becomes the first in a new line of models to be called F Sport Performance.

F names aren't new to Lexus; many will recall the brand’s previous F models, pure sports cars powered by a V8 engine. There's even still one to be found in the carmaker’s lineup, the RC.? A First Recall for the Ford Bronco Sport

Up to now, the news has been more encouraging than not when it comes to the revived Bronco that Ford is launching this year. There’s been a ton of anticipation, a ton of pre-orders and much looking forward to seeing both the bigger Bronco and the smaller Bronco Sport on the road.

In the case of the Bronco Sport, which is essentially a more adventurous version of the Ford Escape, the first models are in fact on the road, while we still await big brother Bronco.

Unfortunately, the first roll-out of the Sport has now been followed by a first recall, which is obviously something Ford would rather not be doing right now. The automaker says that 1,666 units of the model in all are being recalled, this after an internal investigation revealed that some Bronco Sports left the factory loose or missing rear suspension bolts.

The rear suspension of the Bronco Sport is bolted to a subframe, and it’s there that there are pieces loose or missing. When this is so, the ride can be bouncy or nervous, to say the least. The problem also increases the risk of an accident and can compromise safety in the event of a rear-end collision.

Fortunately, Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem. In total, 1,640 of the 1666 Bronco Sport units that are being recalled are on U.S. soil, while 24 are in Canada and two are in Mexico. The models thought to have the faulty suspension were assembled at the Hermosillo plant in Mexico between July 22 and November 24, 2020. These were the first vehicles to be built.

Ford has not indicated when it will officially launch the campaign to make the repairs. Once at the dealership, a technician will check that the bolts are present and tightened according to specifications. Replacement bolts will be installed, if necessary.

If you own a Bronco Sport, you can always have it checked at your dealership before receiving notification from Ford.
