2009 Nissan Maxima S ECM REPROGRAM INTERRUPTION RECOVERY

ECM REPROGRAM INTERRUPTION RECOVERY
TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
Reference Number(s): 1SX1, Date of Issue: June 21, 2010
ECM REPROGRAM INTERRUPTION RECOVERY
While performing ECM (Engine Control Module) reprogramming, the reprogramming may stop
(become interrupted) before it is 100% complete.
In many cases, reprogramming recovery is possible and the ECM may not need to be
replaced if the complete ECM part number has been registered into the ECM before
reprogramming stopped.
This ECM Reprogram Interruption Recovery General Procedure applies to Technical Service
Bulletins that include ECM reprogramming published in April 2010 and later.
ECM REPROGRAMMING RECOVERY PROCEDURE
1. Turn the ignition OFF (keep it off for at least 10 seconds).
2. Close / turn OFF the CONSULT-III (C-III) program.
3. Make sure the following are connected:
l Use the USB cable to connect the Vehicle Interface (VI) to the C-III computer
and then connect the VI to the vehicle.
l Connect the AC Adapter to the C-III computer.
INFINITI: All
NISSAN: All
NOTE: This procedure is used when the reprogramming stops (is interrupted)
before ECM (Engine Control Module) reprogramming is 100% complete.
IMPORTANT: Before performing the reprogram interruption recovery, make sure:
l ASIST on the C-III computer has been freshly synchronized
(updated).
l All C-III software updates (if any) have been installed.
NOTE: The C-III computer automatically gets applicable ECM
reprogram recovery data during ASIST synchronization.
CAUTION: For ECM reprogramming, be sure to have the C-III computer
connected to the VI with the USB cable. If the C-III computer
is not connected to the VI with the USB cable, the ECM may
be damaged.

l Connect a battery charger to the vehicle battery:
For Conventional Vehicles
¡ Set the battery charger at a low charge rate.
For Hybrid Vehicles
l Use the GR-8 - Battery and Electrical Diagnostic Station.
l If needed, refer to Hybrid Service TSBs for connecting the GR-8 to the Hybrid
12V battery.
4. Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.
l The engine must be OFF (not running) during the reprogram recovery procedure.
l For Hybrid vehicles, Make sure the dash warning lights are ON and the "READY"
light is OFF (see Figure 1). READY light should be OFF (not visible) Figure 1
CAUTION: Be sure to connect the AC Adapter. If the C-III computer
battery voltage drops during reprogramming recovery, the
process will be interrupted and the ECM will be damaged.
NOTE: The GR-8 (Battery and Electrical Diagnostic Station) set to
"Power Supply" mode is recommended.
CAUTION: Be sure the battery charger is connected securely to the
battery. Make sure the battery voltage stays above 12 V
during reprogramming. If the battery voltage drops during
reprogramming recovery, the ECM will be damaged.
CAUTION: DO NOT use a standard battery charger for Hybrid vehicles.
Make sure to connect the GR-8 securely to the Hybrid 12V
battery. Make sure the battery voltage stays above 12 V
during reprogramming recovery. If the battery voltage drops
during reprogramming recovery, the ECM will be damaged.

l Turn OFF all vehicle electrical loads such as exterior lights, interior
lights, HVAC, blower, rear defogger, audio, NAVI, seat heater, steering wheel
heater, etc.
5. Open/start ASIST on the C-III computer, then select CONSULT Utilities > CONSULT
III.
6. Wait for the "Detecting VI/MI in progress" message to clear (picture not shown).
7. Select the "Detected VI" from the list (see Figure 2).
8. Select Connect (see Figure 2). Step 7 Step 8 Figure 2
IMPORTANT: Make sure to turn OFF all vehicle electrical loads. If the vehicle battery
voltage drops below 12 V before reprogramming recovery starts,
reprogramming recovery will not complete.
NOTE: It is likely that the engine cooling fans will come ON when the ignition
is turned ON. If the fans are running, they will continue to run the entire
time you are performing the reprogramming recovery procedure.

recovery is not available. Install a new ECM in the vehicle and program it to
the latest version. Make sure to input the VIN as part of the process.
l If a Part Number is listed, select it and continue with the reprogramming
recovery procedure.
