Toyota will invest $210 million to expand West Virginia engine production

WASHINGTON — Toyota is investing $210 million to expand engine production in West Virginia and add 100 new jobs.

The Japanese automaker said it would boost capacity by 70,000 engines a year at the Buffalo, West Virginia plant, up from the nearly 1 million transmissions and engines it produces annually for vehicles assembled in North America.

The investment will increase assembly capacity of its four-cylinder engine line. The plant makes four- and six-cylinder engines for Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Lexus ES, Lexus RX350, RAV4 and Sienna.

The investment comes as automakers around the world are shifting more focus to electric vehicles and away from vehicles powered by internal combustion engines.

Toyota says hybrid vehicles, which includes internal combustion engines, will be a key part of its vehicle strategy in the coming decade as other automakers focus more heavily on battery electric vehicles, which only run on electric power.

Toyota said last week that 16% of its U.S. sales were hybrid vehicles in 2020, a figure that will jump to at least 20% in 2021.

Gunther Werks puts a modern spin on the ultra-rare 993 Speedster

California-based tuner Gunther Werks elbowed its way onto the crowded resto-modded scene by bringing the 993-generation Porsche 911 into the 21st century. It built and sold 25 cars, which is easier said than done. Its followup is a modern interpretation of the ultra-rare 993-based Speedster with a muscular look and the power to match.

Gunther closely followed Porsche's definition of a Speedster by adding a hard cover over the space formerly occupied by the rear seats, but it didn't chop the 993's roof off and call it a day; that would have been too easy. It also redesigned the front bumper, added new-look rear lights, and created a decklid with an integrated spoiler specifically for the Speedster. Most of the body panels and the aforementioned cover are built with carbon fiber.

Extra bracing tucked under the body helps offset the loss of rigidity, while roll hoops behind the seats protect the occupants in the event of a rollover. Although the renderings released by Gunther show the Speedster with a windshield, brave buyers who want to face the wind (and the bugs) head-on can order the car without one.

There's more carbon fiber inside: the floors, seat shells, and parts of the dashboard are manufactured with the weight-saving material. Gunther also moved the pedals to make the driving position more ergonomic.

Like the coupe, the Speedster is powered by a naturally-aspirated, 4.0-liter flat-six built by Rothsport Racing. It's tuned to develop over 435 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque, and it spins the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. Gunther pegs the engine's redline at 7,800 rpm in the name of durability and reliability.

Gunther Werks will build 25 units of the 993 Speedster, and the lucky enthusiasts who send the company a deposit will be encouraged to work directly with the styling department to create a custom-designed car. We don't know precisely what it takes to put one in your garage, but keep in mind the company charged $525,000 for the 400R.

The official Speedsters

Even at over half a million dollars, the 993 Speedster is an absolute bargain compared to the two examples built by Porsche. The first was given to Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the son of company founder Ferry Porsche, for his 60th birthday on December 11, 1995. Shown above, it's now part of the Porsche collection. It's occasionally displayed in the company's museum and sometimes taken out, though its odometer only shows around 1,300 miles.

Jerry Seinfeld commissioned the second example. In 2000, he shipped his 1998 4S Cabriolet back to Porsche and asked the company to transform it into a replica of what was then the only 993 Speedster. Porsche obliged, and it sent the second and final 993-based Speedster across the Atlantic in 2001. The project's cost was not made public.

Harley-Davidson is known for lots of things — big V-twin engines dripping in chrome, heavyweight touring motorcycles, leather — but they definitely aren't known for diving into completely new market segments. The brand-new Pan America 1250 challenges that perception. It's a clean-sheet adventure touring motorcycle, and even if it's still sporting a V-twin, this one is liquid cooled and tuned to produce 150 horsepower, 94 pound-feet of torque, a 9,500-rpm redline and "a broad powerband that builds to a rush of high-RPM power."

That 60-degree, 1,250-cubic-centimeter, double-overhead-cam engine is a stressed member with a front frame, mid frame and tail section bolting directly to it to make up the chassis. A cast-aluminum swingarm stretches the wheelbase to 62.2 inches, which is just a half inch longer than the Ducati Multistrada V4. Alfa Romeo F1 team reveals 2021 car, will limit updates on it to focus on 2022

Alfa Romeo will not develop its new Formula One car beyond the summer in order to give itself the best shot at a step up in 2022, technical director Jan Monchaux said on Monday.

With sweeping new rules next year and a budget cap now in place, the Swiss-based team cannot afford to spend time and money on improvements that may bring scant reward in terms of points.

"We've got a mountain to climb for 2022," Monchaux told Reuters in a video interview after the online launch of the red and white C41 car in Warsaw's Grand Theatre, the venue reflecting Polish sponsors Orlen.

"We've got to do a complete car, under the budget cap, and that is a monster challenge for a company like ours."

Next year represents a real chance to reset the clock and return to the midfield, after finishing eighth for three years in a row.

The current cars are a close evolution of the 2020 ones with some aerodynamic tweaks, but 2022 marks a big change of direction with bigger 18-inch tires also thrown into the equation.

"The more time we spend on the '21 (car), the less resource we will have to make a good job on the '22," said Monchaux.

He said the team had been 'carrying an anchor' since 2017, when they raced as Sauber and finished 10th overall and as much as four seconds off the pace.

"If you start a new era with such a deficit, it's simply game over," he said. "So 2022, we can't miss that deadline and I think most of the teams will be thinking the same.

"We won't bring updates after the summer, that's quite clear.

"You might have some people fighting for the title, they might be willing to push (development) longer because it's a unique opportunity to be champion, but we are certainly not going to do that.

"We will stop way earlier than in a normal season, also because of the budget cap."

2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer Review | It's cute, distinctive and we like it

The 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer is Chevy’s latest entry in a constantly growing legion of tiny crossovers. Despite its name previously being used for a midsize SUV, the new Trailblazer is substantially smaller and bridges a gap between the subcompact Trax and compact Equinox. It accomplishes that task with a lot more style than either of those rather drab people movers. It’s cute, distinctive and we like it.

Unlike the bigger and mechanically unrelated Chevy Blazer, the Trailblazer doesn’t stand out for its driving dynamics. Instead, Chevy makes up ground with its relatively large back seat and versatile cargo area. Also of note are its two unique trim levels: the outdoorsy Activ and sporty RS. From the curb, either of these will stand out from the crowd of other boring small crossovers. That's a good thing, and in general, the Trailblazer is perfectly competitive for this growing segment of small crossovers that slots in between subcompacts and compacts. That said, its driving experience leaves much to be desired, and it's pretty expensive when compared to its very strong competition. That includes the Mazda CX-30 or Kia Seltos, while align with the Trailblazer RS, as well as the more rugged Ford Bronco Sport and Subaru Crosstrek, which are stronger choices looking to take their little SUV on outdoor adventures.

What’s the Trailblazer interior and in-car technology like?

The Trailblazer’s interior design and styling resembles other Chevy crossovers. That means it's rather uninspiring to look at with plenty of black plastic switchgear, but it doesn’t feel cheap or especially low-rent for the money. The Activ may lack an 'e' in its name, but at least it has some nice touches like a neat cloth pattern on the front doors and brown-painted dash trim (pictured above right). The RS gets a flat-bottom leather steering wheel and red interior accents (picture above middle). The available eight-way power driver seat allows for a long range of movement and would be suitable for taller drivers.

The Trailblazer can be loaded up with tech competitive for its segment. A 7-inch infotainment touchscreen comes standard, and an 8-inch is optional. Both feature wireless Apple CarPlay (that works quickly and easily) and wireless Android Auto, but can also accept a traditional wired connection. Those who use the wireless functionality will find the wireless phone charging pad handy, letting them store the phone in a cubby ahead of the shifter. The instrument panel isn’t fully digital, but a small screen between the tach and speedo can cycle through a number of informational readouts. GM also makes its handy rearview camera mirror available as an option.

You should also think twice about the available panoramic sunroof since it significantly reduced headroom.

Cargo space is officially measured at 25.3 cubic feet behind the second row and 54.4 cubic feet with the seats down. That’s well ahead of the Trax and just behind the Equinox in maximum utility. We found that it's not quite as spacious with the seats up as that official figure would indicate, but its distinctive fold-flat front passenger seat grants it a degree of versatility that its competitors cannot match.
