What's the best hybrid SUV on the market?
2021 Ford Bronco Sport Badlands Road Test | The best version on pavement, too
In the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport range, the Badlands is marketed as the off-road specialist. To back that up, it includes an array of off-road-oriented features. As it turns out, though, some of those features also make it the most entertaining version on the street. Add in ample convenience features and competitive pricing, and you have the best Bronco Sport and a serious competitor among rugged, entry-level crossovers.
Distinguishing the Badlands from other Bronco Sports are the mechanical upgrades. Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque (on premium fuel). Those are increases of 69 hp and 87 lb-ft over other Bronco Sport models. It’s coupled to an eight-speed automatic sending power to all four wheels, but it gets a torque-vectoring dual-clutch rear differential. And in addition to providing torque vectoring, it, and the center differential, can be locked for extra traction. The transmission and rear diff get their own oil coolers, too. The Badlands comes standard with 28.5-inch all-terrain tires as standard, with 29-inch tires as an option. The Badlands also gets off-road-tuned suspension with hydraulic bump stops, skid plates, unique Mud and Rock Crawl drive modes (aka G.O.A.T modes), a front-mounted camera, as well as Ford’s off-road cruise control system called Trail Control.
We’ve previously spent some time with the Badlands off-road, where its trail tools performed admirably. This time, we were able to try it out in its real natural habitat, city streets and freeways, and it more than makes a case for itself here, too. The engine is a sweetheart. Not only does it deliver every bit of its rated output, it does so over a fat power band, making it quick in nearly any situation. Then there’s that trick rear axle. While not the same as what was found in the dearly departed Ford Focus RS, it operates in a similar manner: on either side of the differential is a clutch that can engage or disengage an axle to send power to the wheel where it’s most needed (torque-vectoring). And in sport mode, the torque-vectoring tuning is adjusted, and even more of the engine's torque is sent rearward. This seriously changes the character of the Bronco Sport, making it more neutral and willing to power through corners. In the default mode, or in the regular 1.5-liter-equipped Bronco Sport that has a more conventional, non-torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system, there’s more natural tendency toward understeer. We’d love to see Ford make this all-wheel-drive system available in something like an Escape ST.
Not all of these changes necessarily improve the on-road experience, but they don’t really detract from it either. The off-road-tuned suspension can be a little busy and bumpy over mildly rough pavement, something we noted with a non-Badlands Bronco Sport. It does breeze through big potholes, though. There’s some mild-to-moderate body roll, due in part to the crossover’s tall stature. Still, it’s quite responsive and maneuverable. The all-terrain tires also had more than adequate grip and are surprisingly quiet, maintaining the well-isolated cabin's serenity.
If there's one area that could use improvement, it’s the slow-shifting automatic transmission – be it left to its own devices or, worse, when prodded by the driver in manual mode.? Fortunately, it's smooth enough and the transmission computer has a good shift logic, so it doesn’t shift too often and doesn’t have to go through multiple cogs to get to the one it wants.
While the Badlands’ mechanical bits are its main draw, it also receives some nice interior upgrades. Dark blue or orange upholstery replaces the plain black or gray found in entry-level models, and an equally attractive brown leather upholstery is an option. Those colors are mirrored on plastic trim in the doors and dash, which brighten up the otherwise dull interior and distract from some of the cheaper hard plastics on display. Ford also offers an optional brown and black leather and faux suede that’s even fancier. Regardless of upholstery, the front seats feature heating and multiple ways to adjust them, with the driver getting power adjustment. Automatic climate control is standard, with dual-zone as an option.
The Badlands comes standard with the same 8-inch infotainment system as every Bronco Sport along with also-standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and four USB ports. The touchscreen is bright, sharp and responsive, and located where it’s easy to read and reach. The instrument panel relies on traditional analog gauges bolstered by a 6.5-inch central display. It features eye-catching graphics, which is generally a good thing, but when selecting drive/GOAT modes, it takes forever for the system to cycle through the special mode-specific animation. The lag time between turning the mode dial and its confirmation onscreen is far too long, though also an issue we've found in other Fords.
It doesn’t miss out on too much compared to the nearly identically priced, but far less powerful, Outer Banks trim level. The ostensibly more plush Outer Banks includes dual-zone automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, ambient lighting, leather-trimmed seats, a heated steering wheel, remote start, and rain-sensing wipers. Most of these features are available on the Badlands with the addition of the $2,595 Badlands Package. But even without that, we’d take the Badlands over the Outer Banks for the much improved driving experience.
Besides being an attractive package compared to other trim levels, the Bronco Sport Badlands is a highly competitive rugged crossover. Not that it's easy to identify obvious apples-to-apples competitors. It's roomier than Jeep's Renegade and Compass Trailhawk models, and offers more power and better handling while featuring at least as much off-road capability. It's also pricier ($4,000 more than Renegade; $2,000 more than Compass). Above it in size and price are the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, Subaru Outback XT and Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road, but their powertrains hardly align and the latter pair are hardly rock crawlers.
Of course, the Bronco Sport, particularly the Badlands, has broad enough appeal that it can easily be considered by those who have no intention of ever going off-road. So, if you’re simply in the market for a stylish, capable little crossover, you owe it to yourself to check out the Bronco Sport, and in particular the Badlands. Sure, it will get you surprisingly far off-road, but it will also keep you quite entertained on the road, all at a reasonable price.

Nissan Patrol Nismo spotted during commercial filming
A Nismo edition of the Nissan Patrol, what we in the U.S. know as the Armada, has been spotted. The SUV was captured without any camouflage during what looked to be an official commercial shoot in the Middle East, just as the production was wrapping up and the truck was being loaded onto a trailer.
As seen by Instagram account jokerr.cars, the Patrol Nismo is based on the recently facelifted 2021 model, the Nismo edition adds a more aggressive fascia with large intakes on either side of a taller grille. The sportier looks continue with side skirts and a modified rear bumper, as well as an air dam highlighted with Nismo's signature red paint. Out back, a large exhaust tip hints at a freer-breathing system. It also wears hulking 22-inch alloys made by renowned Japanese racing wheel company Rays.

This would not be the first Patrol to be tuned by Nissan's in-house motorsports division. The Yokohama-based company released the original in 2015, giving it a 28-horsepower bump over the stock 400. The interior also featured subtle Nismo cues including red accents on some of the trim and upholstery. We can't see what's under the hood or inside from the spy shots, but we expect a similar treatment. The new Patrol Nismo's Rays wheels are a carry-over from this model.
That Patrol was an exclusive Middle East model, and with good reason. The Patrol has an enormous cult following there, rivaling even that of the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser. In fact, Nissan even continues to sell the previous-generation Patrol there (which we never got in the U.S.) as the Patrol Safari, alongside its successor. Those were famous for being tuned into 800-horsepower monsters by drag racers.
It's almost certain that the new Patrol Nismo will remain a Middle East-only model. In any case, if Nissan is wrapping up a video shoot, we can probably expect an official debut within a couple of months.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Carhartt Edition Road Test | The upmarket outdoorsman
While GM is working on broader updates to its full-size pickups, the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado Carhartt Edition is being offered to help move 2500 HDs in the meantime. Joining the ranks of some other national and more localized packages (looking at you, Texas Edition), it adds some aesthetic bits along with some of the Silverado HD’s more-frequently selected add-ons.
Chevy’s Carhartt tie-up is certainly not the first between an apparel company and an automaker. The most famous is Ford with Eddie Bauer, but there have also been those with LL Bean (Subaru), Mossy Oak (Ram) and Orvis (Jeep), just to name a few. Back in the day, high-end fashion designers and brands would partner with luxury automakers, most notably Lincoln.
Pairing Chevy with Carhartt certainly makes sense. Known for producing work clothes and hunting gear, the century-old American clothing brand is also headquartered in the Detroit metro area. Win-win.
Now, I’m a short, nerdy guy who works a desk job. I’ve never set foot in a deer blind in my life. Carhartt isn’t exactly my lifestyle brand of choice, but I have driven every other pickup in existence in the past six weeks, so, hey, why not?
Like most such packages, what we’re dealing with here is basically a popular equipment bundle with some branded dress-up bits, and popular equipment is usually called such because, well, people like it. This particular bundle includes quite a bit of it.
On the surface, it seems pretty straightforward. Take a 2021 Silverado 2500 HD LTZ 4X4 Crew Cab (MSRP: $55,295), slap on the Z71 off-road package ($325) and, bam, you've unlocked the magical Carhartt package ($3,040) with its custom interior and exterior dress-up bits, 20-inch wheels, custom tonneau cover, side rails, and body-colored bumpers. Simple, right?
Well, I wouldn’t have brought it up if it was. That seems like a reasonable deal for what it is, but the catch is that opting for Carhartt also locks you into a few other packages: LTZ Plus ($2,645), LTZ Convenience Package II ($1,670), and Safety Package II ($645). All in, you’re looking at $63,620. Our tester upped the ante further with the 6.6L Duramax V8 diesel ($9,890), Technology Package ($1,475) and Gooseneck/Fifth wheel package ($1,090), for a grand total of $75,575. You can do the same with a Crew Cab long-bed model if you’d like, for about $2,000 more.
Yeah, that’s a lot of equipment and, correspondingly, a lot of money. Setting aside everything above and beyond the bare minimum Carhartt configuration, you’re still getting an 8-inch touchscreen navigation system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, lots of safety tech, the Z71 off-road suspension and all-terrain tires, heated seats front and rear, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and enough cameras to run your own surveillance service – including two inputs designated for trailer cameras.
And all of this stuff works great. In fact, if you ask me what makes the cost of modern pickups worthwhile, the above list is pretty much what I’d rattle off. Personally, I’d prefer them on something that doesn't take up 10% of my property footprint by itself, but for those who need to tow a small house, this is an incredibly plush way to do it.
The heated accessories are especially nice in cold climates. It snowed a little bit every day I had this Silverado for evaluation, and they were life-savers until that big diesel warmed up, which can take a while, especially if you’re just running errands around town. The tonneau cover was also great to have since it made rear-end snow removal a breeze.

Red Bull F1 team reveals its potential Mercedes-beater
?
LONDON — Red Bull provided a glimpse on Tuesday of the Formula One car that Max Verstappen hopes will take him to a first title and end seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton's reign with Mercedes.
The team published studio images online of the matte-liveried RB16B car, substantially similar to last year's model but with Honda branding in place of previous title sponsor Aston Martin.
Aston Martin is now a team in its own right after the renaming of Racing Point under Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll.
"Same same ... but different," Red Bull commented on Twitter.
"On the surface, the first images of the new car suggests that not too much has changed over the winter," the team added on its website.
"Far from it, as under the skin the RB16B features plenty of changes that maintain F1’s status as a serial battle of the boffins."
Red Bull won two races last year with Verstappen and finished distant runner-up to Mercedes, which has taken both titles for the past seven years and will be the favorite to stretch that run to eight.
Verstappen won 2020's season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from pole position, however.
The Honda-powered outfit has signed experienced Mexican Sergio Perez in place of Thai racer Alexander Albon, who drops to the reserve role, to boost Red Bull's push for a first title since 2013 and increase their strategic options.
Perez, renowned for the way he can make the tires last, was a winner for Racing Point in Bahrain last December after going from last to first.
Verstappen and Perez will try out the car for the first time at Silverstone on Wednesday in a filming day, with Albon also in attendance.
"Mercedes were so dominant last year, and that DNA is probably a large percentage of their current car," team principal Christian Horner told reporters last week when asked about the prospects.
"We demonstrated in Abu Dhabi that they are beatable at a track they'd been unbeaten at for the previous six or seven years. We just need to be able to do that on a consistent basis across the 22 or 23 races.
"We are gathering momentum."
The season that starts in Bahrain on March 28 will Honda's last as power unit supplier before its hand over the technology to Red Bull, who will race from 2022 with its own brand of engines.

Porsche says its synthetic fuel will make internal combustion as clean as EVs
With the automotive world rapidly heading towards electrification and governments banning the sale of internal combustion engine cars in the coming decades, it would seem that the days of traditional cars are numbered. However, a few automakers, including Porsche, Audi and Mazda, have been investing in synthetic fuels that could be just as clean as electric vehicles.
In a recent interview with Evo magazine, Porsche VP of Motorsport and GT cars, Dr. Frank Walliser, says that synthetic fuels, also called eFuels, can reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of existing ICE cars by as much as 85 percent. And, he says, when you account for the wheel-to-well impact of manufacturing the EV, it's a wash.
Synthetic fuels are made by extracting hydrogen via renewable energy, and capturing it liquid form with carbon dioxide. Compared to pump fuel, eFuels emit fewer particulates and nitrogen oxide as well. That's because, as Walliser explains, they are composed of eight to 10 ingredients while the dead plants we mine contain 30 to 40, many of which are simply burned and emitted as pollution in the process.
While Porsche is continuing to develop EVs like the Taycan, it says that ICEs will continue to exist in the market for many years to come. Synthetic fuels, along with electrified cars, would be part of a multi-pronged approach to reducing emissions as quickly as possible. Mazda gave a similar statement a couple weeks earlier when it became the first car company to join Europe's eFuel Alliance.
Though they didn't explicitly say so, it would seem that carmakers like Porsche and Mazda have a vested interest in keeping their iconic models on the road as well. Synthetic fuels would allow owners to continue driving them without any modification to the existing engines.
According to Evo, Porsche plans, at least initially, to only use synthetic fuels in motorsports applications and at its Porsche Experience Centers. Porsche will have 130,000 liters (approx. 34,000 gallons) available by 2022 and will conduct its first trials then.

150 years of spills: Philadelphia refinery cleanup highlights toxic legacy of fossil fuels
PHILADELPHIA — Wearing blue hard hats, white hazmat suits and respirator masks, workers carted away bags of debris on a recent morning from a sprawling and now-defunct oil refinery once operated by Philadelphia Energy Solutions (PES).
Other laborers ripped asbestos from the guts of an old boiler house, part of a massive demolition and redevelopment of the plant, which closed in 2019 after a series of explosions at the facility.
Plans call for the nearly 1,400-acre site to be transformed into a new commercial hub with warehousing and offices. All it will take is a decade, hundreds of millions of dollars, and confronting 150 years’ worth of industrial pollution, including buried rail cars and a poisonous stew of waste fuels poured onto the ground. A U.S. refinery cleanup of this size and scope has no known precedent, remediation experts said.
It’s a glimpse of what lies ahead if the United States hopes to wean itself off fossil fuels and clean up the toxic legacy of oil, gas and coal.
President Joe Biden wants to bring the United States to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 to fight climate change through a shift to clean-energy technologies, while reducing pollution in low-income and minority neighborhoods near industrial facilities.
It’s a transition fraught with challenges. Among the biggest is what to do with the detritus left behind. The old PES plant is just one of approximately 135 oil refineries nationwide, to say nothing of the country’s countless gas stations, pipelines, storage hubs, drill pads and other graying energy infrastructure.
In recent months, at least six other large U.S. oil refineries — from New Jersey to California — have announced they will close or cease oil refining as the coronavirus pandemic has sapped global fuel demand.
"The energy transition will require massive attention to both new infrastructure and addressing aging or outdated systems," said Morgan Bazilian, director of the Payne School of Public Policy at the Colorado School of Mines.
In Philadelphia, a private-sector company is taking the lead. Hilco Redevelopment Partners, a real estate firm that specializes in renovating old industrial properties, bought the PES refinery out of bankruptcy for $225.5 million in June.
Asbestos abatement alone will require four years to complete, said Roberto Perez, chief executive of the Chicago-based company.
"There's enough pipeline to connect you from here to Florida, and the majority of that pipeline today is wrapped in asbestos," Perez said.
The full extent of the pollution won't be understood for years. Also uncertain is the ability of the refinery's previous owners to pay their share of the cleanup. The facility has had multiple owners over its lifetime and responsibility has been divided between them through business agreements and legal settlements.
A lot is riding on the outcome. Transformation of the refinery, the oldest and largest on the U.S. East Coast, could bring jobs to a low-income, racially diverse neighborhood that needs them.
But residents also want a say in how the work proceeds after enduring the brunt of the refinery’s pollution. Some complained about feeling shut out of the process during a recent virtual public meeting organized by companies involved in the cleanup.
The refinery's previous owner, Sunoco Inc, had gone years without holding city-mandated public meetings about pollution at the site.
Evergreen Resources Group, LLC, a subsidiary of Sunoco's parent company, Energy Transfer LP, which is in charge of managing a share of the cleanup, declined to comment on the lapse in meetings. It pointed to a website it launched last year to engage with the public about the project.
Hilco’s Perez has no illusions about the work ahead.
"This is a very heavy lift," he said. "It's probably one of the most complicated things I've ever done."
SURPRISES IN A TOXIC SOUPOil refining at the Philadelphia site began in 1870, 100 years before the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Gasoline, once a worthless byproduct of heating oil, was routinely dumped by the refinery into the soil, according to historians and researchers. Leaks and accidents spewed more toxins. The June 2019 blasts alone released 676,000 pounds of hydrocarbons, PES said at the time.
The Philadelphia site is not unique. About half of America's 450,000 polluted former industrial and commercial sites are contaminated with petroleum, according to the EPA.
"That's one of the reasons that a lot of these refineries have been kept going for such a long time," said Fred Quivik, a Minnesota-based industrial historian. "They're so contaminated, it's hard to figure out what else to do with them."
Cleanup in Philadelphia will be painstaking. After asbestos abatement comes the demolition and removal of 3,000 tanks and vessels, along with more than 100 buildings and other infrastructure, the company said.
Then comes the ground itself. Hilco's Perez said dirt quality varies widely on the site and will have to be handled differently depending on contamination levels. Clearing toxins like lead must be done with chemical rinses or other technologies, said Charles Haas, professor of environmental engineering at Drexel University in Philadelphia.
The site also has polluted groundwater and giant benzene pools lurking underneath, according to environmental reports Sunoco filed over the years with the federal and state governments.
Perez, Hilco’s chief executive, said clean energy will be a centerpiece of the final project. The warehouse complex, for example, will aim to feature charging stations for a fleet of electric delivery vehicles, he said.
The company is also considering a hotel, residential homes, and a restaurant on the site, two people familiar with the plans said.
The project is expected to take 10 to 15 years to finish. Cleanup and construction are projected to create about 13,000 jobs, the company said, with another 19,000 jobs tied to warehousing, offices and transporting goods.
PICKING UP THE BILLThe final price tag is unclear.
The development’s fate hinges on previous polluters paying their fair share. The site, founded by the Atlantic Refining Company, later known as ARCO, has cycled through several owners.
Sunoco, which owned the refinery for about two decades, sold its majority stake in 2012 to Carlyle Group Inc, which later formed PES. That deal stipulated that Sunoco assume all environmental liabilities dating to the plant's inception in the 1800s. Energy Transfer, which bought Sunoco the same year as the refinery sale, now shoulders that burden.
Dallas-based Energy Transfer has $205 million in insurance to cover all of Sunoco's decommissioned sites, including PES, according to the company's filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Amanda Goodin, a lawyer with the environmental group Earthjustice who has litigated major environmental cleanup cases, said comparable projects, such as clearing shuttered mining operations, can run into the billions of dollars.
"These cleanups are just enormously expensive, and companies basically never set aside enough money to fully remediate a site," Goodin said.
Energy Transfer would not say how much it expects its share of the PES refinery cleanup to cost, but spokeswoman Vicki Granado said it is "fully funded".
Hilco, as part of its 2020 purchase of PES, assumed liabilities tied to the last eight years of the refinery's life, a tab it estimates will amount to "hundreds of millions" of dollars. The company declined to be more specific, but said it believes it has the funds for the job.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection said it has consent orders against Sunoco and Hilco that enable the regulator to sue the companies if they attempt to walk away, spokeswoman Virginia Cain said.
ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICEAbdul Muhammad, 34, who lives near the Philadelphia refinery, says life has improved since it shut down. His asthmatic baby son now sleeps through the night, while his wife's chronic headaches have become less frequent.
"I just don't want chemicals and environmentally contaminated things going in and out of there," he said of his wishes for the site.
Philly Thrive, a community activist group, has been pressuring Hilco and city officials to ensure that neighborhood residents have a say in the cleanup and redevelopment.
Some of their hopes rest with the Biden administration, which has committed to direct 40% of any federal clean-energy investment to communities most impacted by industrial pollution.
But whether climate legislation emerges from a divided Congress remains to be seen.
Philadelphia officials hope PES can become a model for refinery cleanups elsewhere. Kenyatta Johnson, a city councilman who represents neighborhoods surrounding the facility, sees a healthy, more prosperous community emerging from its toxic shadow.
"Some may deem the site a health hazard and eyesore, but nevertheless it's an opportunity," Johnson said.

Mercedes-Benz explains why next C-Class will get only four-cylinder engines
Mercedes-Benz ruffled more than a few feathers when it confirmed the next-generation C-Class (called W206 internally) will downsize to a four-cylinder-only range. That means the fire-breathing, V8-powered C63 will lose half of its cylinders, and the silky-smooth straight-six that powers bigger cars will not be available. While all carmakers are trying to keep emissions in check, the German firm explained regulations weren't its only motivation.
"With the 3.0-liter [straight-six] engine, the front end would have grown by [two inches] in length, not to mention the higher axle load and its impact on driving dynamics," explained Christian Früh, the W206's chief engineer, in an interview with Automotive News Europe. He added that plug-in hybrid technology (which adds a not-insignificant amount of weight, too) allowed his team to create a four-cylinder C-Class that offers a level of power comparable to one equipped with a six-cylinder engine. Smoothness and fuel economy are noticeably improved, too.
Electrification will come standard across the board, and it will take different forms, but going entirely electric is out of the question for the time being. Früh pointed out the C-Class is built on Mercedes-Benz's modular MRA platform, which can't be fully electrified while keeping costs and dimensions in check. Making a C-Class that runs on batteries would have required significant changes like bigger wheels, additional ground clearance, or both, and the firm would have ended up with a Franken-sedan. Using the Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA) that will underpin the EQS was ruled out, too, because adapting it would have gone "beyond the dimensional concept and budget of the C-Class."
Downsized, sharper-looking, and comprehensive redesigned, the 2022 C-Class will make its global debut online on February 23, 2021. Mercedes-Benz will stream the unveiling on its Mercedes Me digital platform starting at 2 p.m. European time, which is 8 a.m. in New York City and 5 a.m. in Los Angeles. Sales will start shortly after.
