VW and Audi to resume production in Mexico after winter storm gas shortage

MEXICO CITY — The Mexican unit of Volkswagen will resume production of its Tiguan sports utility vehicle on Monday evening, the company said in a statement on Sunday, following gas shortages that hit swathes of Mexico last week.

Meanwhile, Audi will resume normal production levels at its plant in Puebla on Monday, after "the supply of hydrocarbons to the industrial sector was guaranteed," the company said on Sunday.

VW's Mexico unit said on Friday that a work stoppage on its Jetta model will continue on Monday and Tuesday, due to an ongoing shortage of natural gas.

As of Friday, VW Audi did not have an official notice guaranteeing a supply of natural gas at regular levels, the company said in a statement.?

Mexico's shortage was the result of the same winter weather system that pummeled southwestern parts of the United States last week.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a mandate suspending exports of natural gas to Mexico during the state's shortage, but the effects of that temporary order appear to be easing after the order was rescinded Friday.?

How long can you let a hybrid car sit?

three monthsThe consensus is that leaving a hybrid with nickel-metal-hydride batteries such as yours stored for three months should be okay, but four-five months might be pressing it a bit. Gordon Murray unveils the 725-horsepower track-built T.50s Niki Lauda

Formula One legend Niki Lauda would have been 72 years old if he were alive today. Though he died in 2019, we think he would have heartily approved of the new Gordon Murray T.50s, which will also be called the Niki Lauda as an homage.

That's because Lauda drove the Brabham BT46B "fan car,"? the Formula One car that inspired the T.50's technological centerpiece, to its only victory. The downforce-generating fan helped Lauda win the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix to the dismay of rival teams. Murray also designed that car, and wanted to pay tribute to his friend and three-time F1 champ.

Like the Brabham, the T.50s is not street legal. It's billed as a track version of the GMA T.50, the supercar Murray designed as a pure driver's antidote to the status barges that modern supercars have become. The Lauda leans harder into Murray's philosophy of lightness. Over 200 pounds have been stripped from the road-going T.50, thanks to one less passenger seat in the 1+2 layout, a stripped-out interior, and thinner glass. Total weight, 1,878 pounds.

However, reduced mass isn't the only performance enhancement. The Cosworth-built 3.9-liter V12 now makes 725 horsepower, or 66 more ponies than the standard model. Part of that gain comes from a central roof-mounted intake drawing air into the engine, as well as the removal of any sound restriction hardware from the exhaust.

For the track model, one of the street T.50's dearest features, an old-school manual transmission, has been replaced with a six-speed paddle-shift Xtrac. According to GMA, the gear ratios are more closely spaced on the race car, so a stick shift didn't make sense; the driver would lose precious milliseconds switching gears and taking hands off the wheel.

The Lauda adds several aerodynamic aids that visually differentiate it from the T.50, starting with a wide lower air dam. A trio of NACA ducts funnel fresh air into the cabin and toward the front brakes. A long dorsal fin like the ones found on Le Mans prototypes extends from the cabin roof to the rear, where a GT-style rear wing spans the tail. According to GMA, it generates as much as 3,300 pounds of downforce at 175 mph.

Inside, the central instrument pod has been replaced with a digital screen, and the standard steering wheel with a yoke-type handle. Taking the space on the right, where the manual shifter and console would have been, is a board of toggle switches.

There will only be 25 Niki Laudas produced. Each will feature a plaque celebrating a victory by one of Murray's many F1 car designs, starting with the 1974 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami Circuit. Production begins January 2022, and despite a $4.3 million price tag, GMA says 15 cars are already spoken for.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 revealed with long range, strong performance, concept car looks

When the Hyundai 45 concept car was revealed two years ago, we were impressed by the sleek, creased sheetmetal and airy interior. But we figured that whatever production car came of the design would receive major styling changes to make it work. We were wrong. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 delivers on the looks of the concept inside and out with very few changes, and it's bolstered by the enticing E-GMP platform's range, features and powertrain layout.

The outside of the Ioniq 5 is as striking as the concept, and we're particularly impressed that Hyundai brought the boxy headlight and taillight treatments to market unchanged. The creases on the outside are intact, and they work great with the edgy, forward-leaning hatchback shape. The reveal car features 20-inch wheels that do look smaller than the concepts, but retain the detailed, aerodynamic design. There does appear to be more body cladding, which adopts little creased lines to help it fit in with the exterior's theme. The car has also sprouted door handles, but they're flush as to not distract from the shape and to aid aerodynamics. In some markets, the mirrors can be replaced with low-drag cameras and OLED screens, but they won't be coming to America. On the topic of cool, green features, a solar roof is available like that on the Sonata Hybrid, which can charge the drive battery.

As for size, the Ioniq 5 is unusual. It's nearly 2 inches shorter in length than the Elantra sedan and about 2 inches taller than a Kona, but its 118.1-inch long wheelbase is longer than the Palisade's. In EV terms, it's various dimensions align more closely to a Mustang Mach-E or Nissan Ariya than to a Nissan Leaf or the new Chevy Bolt EUV.

Inside, the dash is as minimalist as that of the 45, and it now has a fun magnetic panel that you can pin photos, notes and such to with fridge magnets. The seats now look more like what you'd find in a car rather than a midcentury modern home, but we're not too disappointed. Why? Well, the front seats not only recline, but even have a La-Z-Boy-like leg rest. The car adopts a moveable center console that can allow for additional space under the dash. The rear seats also slide fore and aft to provide either more passenger room or cargo space. Dual 12-inch displays handle instruments and infotainment, and the head-up display will provide augmented reality-style graphics and information. In a video shown to the press, it works similarly to the Mercedes-Benz augmented camera system in that it can project arrows that look like they're at a similar depth as the street you need to turn onto.

Underneath the striking body is Hyundai's first implementation of the E-GMP platform. It can be equipped with either a rear motor and rear-wheel drive or two motors and all-wheel drive. A standard 58-kWh battery or optional 72.6-kWh battery can supply power. The single motor configuration makes 215 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and the dual-motor setup makes 302 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque. Despite the identical power ratings, the big 72.6-kWh battery versions accelerate faster than the small 58-kWh one. We've listed the powertrain combinations and acceleration times below.

Single-motor 0-60 mph times 72.6-kWh: 7.4 seconds 58-kWh: 8.5 seconds Dual-motor 0-60 mph times 72.6-kWh: 5.2 seconds 58-kWh: 6.1 seconds

As for range, Hyundai has only given an estimate for the longest-range, rear-motor, big-battery configuration at 298 miles on the WLTP cycle. We would expect the EPA range to be a bit shorter. Based on what we know from the Kona Electric and its 64-kWh battery size and 258-mile range, we would expect the 58-kWh Ioniq 5 to have a range between 200 and 250 miles.

Hyundai says the Ioniq 5 will go on sale sometime in the first half of 2021 in "select markets," so it will probably be released for the 2022 model year. Pricing hasn't been announced, but that should be coming in the near future. The Ioniq 5 will also be joined in the next year or two by the Ioniq 6 sedan, based on the Hyundai Prophecy concept, and the Ioniq 7 large SUV.

Forbidden fruit: Cupra Formentor VZ5 borrows Audi's turbo 5-cylinder engine

The standard forbidden fruit-style post you’ll see here is typically about some gorgeous wagon or sports car that’s limited to European consumption only. It’s the rare day that a crossover or SUV makes the cut as being interesting enough to want it in the States, but the Cupra Formentor VZ5 isn’t just any crossover.

Audi has blessed the young Cupra brand (a member of the VW Group) with five-cylinder power taken straight from the engine bay of the RS 3, TT RS and RS Q3. That makes it the second crossover with the 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder under hood, and just like the RS Q3, it’s not coming stateside. We never expected any Cupras to be sold in the U.S., but that doesn’t make our desire for this crossover any less.

The little Formentor VZ5 version of this engine is making 385 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough for a 0-62 mph time of just 4.2 seconds and (limited) top speed of 155 mph. All shifting is handled by a seven-speed DSG gearbox. The chassis gets worked over to match the new power, too.

It’s lowered by 0.4 inch versus a standard Formentor and also features a wider track. Cupra gives it adaptive dampers with a unique tune. The brakes are gigantic six-piston Akebono calipers in front that look superb hiding behind the copper-accented 20-inch wheels.

A number of exterior enhancements mark it out as the VZ5, too. It gets a new, more aggressive hood design, flared arches and front bumper. Carbon fiber is used for the splitter and diffuser. You’ll easily pick it out in the back via the stacked quad exhaust (with copper tips) at each corner.

The interior gets some racy leather bucket seats with big bolsters. A unique sports steering wheel is used for the VZ5, and you’ll see the copper trim theme carried over to the inside, too.

Only 7,000 VZ5 versions of the Formentor are meant to see the light, and as we said at the beginning, none of them will be sold in the U.S. The five-cylinder is the main draw — it’s one of the most characterful and exciting engines in any car today. We adore it in both the RS 3 and TT RS, and can only hope that Audi will bless us with the RS Q3 one day.

Junkyard Gem: 1955 Studebaker Commander Deluxe Conestoga Ultra Vista Station Wagon

Most of the vehicle graveyards I visit during my pursuit of discarded automotive history are owned by big regional or national chains, which means I see a lot of new inventory with every visit but perhaps not as many?really old cars as I'd like to find. For ancient machinery from long-dead marques, your best junkyard choice is an old-time, family-owned business that's been in the same rural location for many decades. The northeastern region of Colorado between Denver and Cheyenne has many such yards, and that's where I found this '55 Studebaker Conestoga.

Located in Dacono, about 25 miles north of Denver, Speedway Auto Wrecking specializes in American cars and trucks from the 1940s through the 1980s. They've got lots of Corvairs, a big Willys section, and even a well-stocked AMC selection.

You'll find just a handful of Studebakers there, but that's enough for me to make the trip; my selection of junkyard Studebaker photos is lamentably small. To be perfectly honest, I was really there to look for a set of 13" steel wheels from an early Ford Falcon, so I can have more tire options on my lowrider 1969 Toyota Corona (the Corona uses the same 4x4.5" wheel bolt pattern as many Fords of the 1960s, and mine has Falcon wheels and dog-dish hubcaps).

The Commander was the mid-level Studebaker of 1955, fitted between the low-priced Champion and the upscale President.

All '55 Commanders got Studebaker's 224-cubic-inch (3.7-liter) pushrod V8 engine, rated at 162 gross horsepower. Studebaker had introduced this family of engines back in 1951, after Cadillac and Oldsmobile came out with modern overhead-valve V8s and the same year as the first Chrysler Hemi car engines.

Studebaker wagons of 1954 and 1955 were given the Conestoga name, which sounds hokey until you realize that the Studebaker family started building horse-drawn wagons in South Bend, Indiana, in 1852. Clement Stutenbacker, an immigrant from Solingen, Germany, built his first US-market wagon around 1750, a couple of generations prior to the Anglicizing of the spelling of the family name. If any car company ever had the right to call station wagons whatever they chose, it was Studebaker.

An automatic transmission was available in the '55 Commander, but it cost a whopping $227 (about $2,225 today). That boosted the price of the $2,274 Commander Conestoga by an additional 10%, so the original buyer of this car stuck with the base transmission: a three-on-the-tree column-shift manual.

Even though it bears South Dakota license plates (three different early-1960s types stacked atop one another, for reasons I don't understand), this car isn't terrifyingly rusty.

However, the interior had been exposed to the erosive force of the High Plains elements for decades, so it's thoroughly ickified by now.

The original Starline 6-tube radio is still inside, and it still shows the markings for the CONELRAD nuclear-attack frequencies. All car radios sold in the United States from the 1953 through the 1963 model years had to have the triangle-in-a-circle Civil Defense symbols marking 640 and 1240 kHz, and you'll see them in much later cars made by smaller manufacturers using up old radio inventories. Imagine a Conestoga road trip in 1955 South Dakota, with the whole family singing along with Tennessee Ernie Ford's voice coming from the single speaker of this radio.

2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance brings back the V8

The 2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance revives the dormant IS F formula, bringing V8 power back to the compact luxury Japanese sport sedan for the first time since 2014 and confirming rumors of a new series of V8-powered performance (small p) cars from Lexus.

Very little surprises us these days, especially in the luxury segment, but if you'd told us a month ago that we'd be confirming a V8-powered Lexus IS and a new, all-four-cylinder lineup for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class in the same week, we'd have called you crazy. Parent company Toyota's presence in Texas may have rubbed off on Lexus, though, because after a years-long hiatus, the V8-powered IS sedan returns. That's right. A V8. In a brand-new compact sport sedan. In 2021.?

The new sport sedan will pack a 472-horsepower, 5.0-liter V8 with 395 pound-feet of torque, making it the spiritual successor to the discontinued Lexus IS F. For those keeping track at home, yes, that's the same V8 Lexus has utilized elsewhere in recent years. It currently powers the RC F coupe and, until last year, was also found under the hood of the larger GS F sedan. Like the BMW M3 it matches for power, the Lexus will come standard with rear-wheel drive and a limited-slip differential, making it a true performance machine.

Power will go to the rear end by way of the same eight-speed automatic Lexus uses elsewhere as well. Sorry, folks, there's no stick, but hey, the IS F didn't have one either, so let's not get too picky. The original IS F also offered just 416 horsepower and 371 lb.-ft. of torque, so remember, this is all upside here. The original also launched without the LSD, if you'll remember; that came later.?

The other significant edge the IS 500 F Sport Performance will have over its two-generations-removed predecessor will be the benefit of almost a decade's worth of interior development. While the IS platform was not significantly overhauled for the 2021 "re-imagining" (as Lexus puts it; we prefer the term "remodel"), the interior was, and the IS 500 F Sport Performance will benefit from all of the base sedan's upgrades, including a thoroughly overhauled infotainment system, which is night-and-day better than what was offered previously. The seats in the IS 500 F Sport Performance appear to be the same found in the IS 350 F Sport, which makes sense.??

The IS 500 F Sport Performance will lift the rest of the IS 350 RWD's F Sport package goodies too, so adaptive variable suspension and upgraded springs, dampers and anti-roll bars should also be in the cards, albeit with adjustments to account for the IS 500 F Sport Performance's additional 143 pounds of curb weight. Yep, that 5.0 will cost you about as much as taking your neighbor along for a joy ride. Lexus claims the IS 500 F Sport Performance sits at 3,891 pounds. The original IS F tipped the scales at 3,780, by the way.

Lexus made no mention of an all-wheel-drive model, which may be bad news for those who need a one-size-fits-all solution, but the AWD system offered in the IS only adds weight and complexity. It's also a bit of an inconvenience, because it requires a noticeable protrusion into the driver’s side footwell to make room for the necessary drivetrain components. It is also paired with a decidedly less sophisticated (or snappy) six-speed automatic. With apologies to those who feel they need the extra driven wheels, we're not bothered by the omission.?

You'll note that Lexus snuck the word "Performance" into the new, V8-powered car's name. Lexus is calling this the first in a new line of enthusiast-oriented models that "will appeal to passionate driving enthusiasts that crave higher levels of performance over the standard F SPORT models." While that means a V8 here, Lexus made no indication that we should read that into any subsequent Performance (capital P) versions. Color us intrigued — and more than a little excited.

We also don't know what this means for the future of "F" as the Lexus performance brand. The existence of the RC F coupe has long served as rationalization for not reviving the Lexus IS F sedan, so we can't help but wonder whether we should take this as a sign that the coupe is not long for this world. Our dearly departed friend, the GS F, certainly sets a grim precedent.?

Ford Shelby F-250 Super Baja aims to be both tow champion and off-road monster

Shelby has a new super truck, and it’s based on the Super Duty. The truck starting life as a Ford F-250 Super Duty isn’t what makes it super, though. No, this Shelby F-250 Super Baja gets its name from being an outright monster off-road.

It’s just one more off-road-focused Ford truck in a fresh sea of others. There’s the standard F-150 Raptor, the incoming Raptor R, a Super Duty Tremor and the Shelby Raptor to choose from. That’s the list if we limit our choices to just the Ford factory and Shelby American — Shelby itself is heavily relying on truck sales these days, even more so than the Mustang. The F-250 Super Baja is the truck for somebody who wants Baja desert-running capabilities and Super Duty towing power — hell of a niche. But hey, the 2021 F-150 Raptor can only tow 8,200 pounds. This Super Duty can haul up to 20,000 pounds, which is no less than what it can do from the factory in this configuration.

That massive tow rating comes thanks to Ford’s PowerStroke 6.7-liter turbo-diesel V8 engine that produces 475 horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet of torque. It remains stock and retains the Ford factory warranty. However, the suspension is wholly different from what you’ll find under a regular F-250.

Shelby adds custom front radius arms and dual steering stabilizer, a BDS Suspension lift kit, Fox Racing shocks with reservoirs front and back, 18-inch wheels and 37-inch BFGoodrich KM3 tires. The body is modified to suit the Shelby’s appearance druthers, but also to aid in off-road driving. It gets powder coated front and rear steel bumpers, fender flares, additional tow points, steps with rock sliders and lights and a functional ram air hood. The list goes on with a bed-mounted dual-tire rack (for two spares), bed liner, Shelby stripes/badges, tinted windows, more LED lighting throughout the truck and a painted front grille with what might be the tackiest “Ford” logo treatment we’ve ever seen. It looks like the logo was wrapped with a black body wrap, and it does not look good.

The interior adds new leather seat covers, Shelby accents and embroidery, stainless steel gauges, carbon fiber accents all around, Shelby floor mats, metal racing pedals, and a serialized plate on the dash.

There will only be 250 of these Super Baja pickups for the 2021 model year, and they have a starting price of $125,805. That includes the truck itself in the price. You’ll be able to pick one up at select dealers across the country.

VW close to decision on selling Bugatti to Rimac

FRANKFURT — Electric hypercar maker Rimac Automobili and Volkswagen's supercar brand Bugatti are a good technological fit, Porsche's CEO told German weekly Automobilwoche, fueling hopes that a deal between the two could happen soon.

British automotive magazine Car last year reported that Volkswagen was on the verge of selling Bugatti to Rimac Automobili, citing sources.

In exchange, Porsche, also owned by Volkswagen, would raise the 15.5% stake it owns in Rimac, founded by Croatian entrepreneur Mate Rimac, Car said.

"At the moment there are intense deliberations on how Bugatti can be developed in the best possible way. Rimac could play a role here because the brands are a good technological fit," Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said.

"There are various scenarios with different structures. I believe that the issue will be decided by the group in the first half of the year," said Blume, who also sits on the management board of parent Volkswagen.

Rimac has developed an electric supercar platform, which he supplies to other carmakers, including Pininfarina.

Blume also confirmed higher savings targets for Porsche, saying the carmaker plans to support results by 10 billion euros ($12.1 billion) of cost cuts by 2025, up from 6 billion previously.
